Not all mentally ill people are violent, but many violent people are mentally ill. The media does a huge disservice to the field of mental health by their misrepresentation and ignorance about mental illness.
Reply:Absolutely NOT. Rates of violence among people with a mental illness are about the same as people without a mental illness, unless you are counting substance abuse as a mental illness. my psychiatrist says only paranoid schizophrenia has a higher rate of violence than the general public, and even in that group, many are non-violent. And not everyone with schizophrenia has paranoid schizophrenia anyway. If you google "mental illness violence" you will see that I am correct. I am VERY informed on this topic!





However, there are much higher rates of violence AGAINST people with mental illess. Like 3x higher, I think it was. This is due to poverty (live in dangerous neighborhoods), inability to see danger coming because of meds or the illness itself. and general vulnerable adult issues.
Reply:Many psychologists will tell you that there are a lot of stigmas associated with mental illnesses and they are not true. People that have been diagnosed with mental disorders are not all violent and crazy like the media portrays them. The media is biased and only shows extreme cases, such as people who kill their children etc.
