3) In a survey 1000 adults were asked whether they favored an increase in the state income tax if the additional revenue went to education. In addition it was noted whether the person lived in a city, suburb or rural part of the state. Do the results indicate that the place of residence and the opinion about tax increase are independent?

Location Tax Yes No

City 300 200

Suburb 150 100

Country 60 50

It indicates that there is a dependence on where someone lives.

In the city the ratio of yes votes to no votes is:

300/200 = 3/2 = 1.5

In the suburb, the ratio of yes to no votes is:

150/100 = 3/2 = 1.5

But in the country, the ratio is:

60/50 = 6/5 = 1.2

You are less likely to be for the tax if you live in the city or suburbs, but less so if in the country.

Answer:

The place and the opinion are DEPENDENT, not independent.
Reply:The place of residence is independent of the opinion. People that live in a City or Country could have the same opinion, however, you would get more votes in the city just because there are more people to take a vote from. A better study would be to take the same sample size from each place of residence and then see what the ratio is of yes to no votes. Once you control that variable, you will get a more conclusive idea of influence on opinion.
Reply:city ratio is 3:2

suburb is 3:2

rural is 6:5

this indicates that you are more likely to be against the tax if you live in the country so it would depend where you live
