What percentage of Americans believe we should stay in Iraq until we fulfill our promises to the Iraqis?

I was watching "The power of ten" and a similar question was asked. The result of their survey showed a very very low percentage agreeing with the concept. I don't think that that reflects very well on America. Does any one out there agree with me?

What percentage of Americans believe we should stay in Iraq until we fulfill our promises to the Iraqis?
I too saw that show and was absolutely shocked at the low number. I believe that once a promise is made, you stick it through until fulfilled. We are gaining and will succed. God Bless the United States of America, our President and all of our Military Personell stationed around the World.
Reply:I won't say I know the percentage. But I believe we need to stay there. As others have said fight terror there or fight it here. I can't believe the vitriol shown by some of these answers. Do these people really hate their own country that much? It's quite a stretch to say Bush doesn't believe the "brown man" should have freedom and democracy. A few on here really need to step away from the kool aid pitcher.
Reply:It is not an open ended commitment but we should help them. We removed their last government. We should be willing to accept a price to force those against free people, to die or hide in holes.
Reply:we should stay for a while ,but the priority now should be getting there security forces in place and giving them weapons .then we leave. Not before .bush caused a huge mess, that needs to be cleaned up some.we need to give money to the country's that's helping out the millions of refugees and get there infrastructure right. You dont do that to a people and not then help them.I pray for them all
Reply:We didn't make any promises. We got rid of a tyrant. Now it is time for us to come home. We are now caught up in a civil war that is being fueled by terrorists.

The real question is, should we still be there after the Iraqis have failed to meet the objectives (BENCHMARKS) we have given them, for them to keep our support. Our money would be better spent in protecting our borders and assisting the Katrina, flood victims. How about repairing and upgrading our bridges. Our country is in as bad a need of repair as any other country on this planet. Our priorities are so screwed up, and we let the politicians throw our money away.

Reply:We made no promises to them. Let them cower in fear of our terror!
Reply:we made no promises , we said the mission was to get the dictator out and we did so but then we should have left them to get the country in the fashion that they wanted it to be not in the one that we want we do not need to be the power behind what is supposedly an elected government
Reply:I don't recall making any promises to Iraq.
Reply:When you live in the U.S. you can have whatever opinion you want on the matter. Our nation is heavily split on the issue and probably will stay that way for a few years.
Reply:As I remember it Rumsfeld promised the Iraqis shock and awe.

Well I think he has fulfilled that promise.
Reply:I am going to have to disagree; we don't owe Iraq anything.
Reply:What if it is NEVER going to happen?
Reply:No, our global reputation is down. But you must understand we cannot leave Iraq now. It'd be a distrastrous mistake. Plus, if we don't combat terrorism over there in the Middle East, then we might as well fight it in downtown Manhattan.
Reply:We didn't make the Iraqi's any promises. We invaded their country...remember?

What was our promise.? We were going to kill 600,000 of them? Or was it that they still would not have drinking water, electricity or sanitary facilities after 5 years! They have Cholera there now, thanks to us, and we are refusing to let them use chlorine to treat their water. We aren't the Iraqi government?
Reply:We have already fulfilled our promises to the Iraqies.
Reply:I know I don't agree with you. What promise did we make to the Iraqis, beyond getting rid of Saddam and introducing them to democracy? So, how is that working out? Saddam's gone, but the Iraqis seem to have forgotten the rest. Why do we keep trying while people keep dying? Makes absolutely no sense!
Reply:VietNam taught us what happens when you leave while winning.

We pulled out of Lebenon.

We pulled out of Somalia.

I vote we stay.
Reply:As an Aussie, reading all these posts, it really scares me to hear how all these Americans think! You have totally been sucked in by your pro-war goverment and media ie. our own Mr Murdoch. (cheers mate) You did not make "promises" to Iraq - you invaded them!

A vast majority of Iraqis don't want you there, and you are responsible for deaths of thousands of civilians. The Iraqis were better off under Saddam. It is the height of arrogance to think that you are "doing them a favour" by gracing them with your redneck, racist, gung-ho military occupation.

Get out now.

And everyone who is associating terrorism with Iraq - open your eyes. Bin Laden is not from Iraq, has never had any association with Iraq and is in all probability not in Iraq now. You have fallen for the media trick of associating the war in Iraq with 9/11. There is NO link, it is just a way to convince you that is is acceptable to spend billions on a strategic, idelogical war.

NB I totally acknowledge that Australia is involved as well and I repeat all those points to my own government. I believe we should with draw from this immoral, unjustifiable war too.

Edit: Wayne C, do you REALLY believe that the US was EVER winning in Vietnam? Let alone at the time they withdrew. Either you are seriously mental, or they teach you a well and truly biased version of history over there in the good old US of A. The Vietnam war was one of the biggest military fiascos of all time!

The US should be using their failure in Vietnam as an example of why they should get out now. A government should NOT be imposing it's military force to sort out what is essentially a civil war between different factions within a sovereign nation. The "Coalition of the Willing" WILL lose, especially when they are up against guerilla fighters (aka terrorists) willing to risk their lives to ensure the invaders leave.
